The only reason the Spire in Wrocław was built in 1946 was to dominate visually the monumental Centennial Hall (then People’s Hall). It was a task given to the organisers of the Regained Territories Exhibition by a state dignitary who, upon a visit to the venue, was angry to notice that ‘this German pot’ would be the biggest building of the exhibition. And the point was to prove the ancient Polishness of this land.
The order was duly fulfilled and the Spire (100m of height) was more than twice as big as the Hall (42m of height). At the top of the construction a crown of eight round 3-meter mirrors was put; it shone during the day in order to emphasise the height of this anti-German weapon. During the opening of the exhibition a storm broke out and the mirrors were destroyed by a lightning. According to the nasties it was a revenge of Germanic gods.
It is therefore obvious that for the Germans it is a special place and a special building which, beyond all doubt, will be disassembled the moment ‘the Germans have arrived’.
