The eponymous 066/AS/’94 is the inventory number of a table in the waiting room of the Custody Suite in Toruń. The entire surface of the table is covered with carved inscrip- tions, signs and slogans made both by the visitors and those on remand.
The Custody Suite in Toruń is the only penal institution in Poland in the shape of a rotunda. This peculiar panopticon, commonly known as the “barrel”, is situated in the very centre of the historical old town. Its inmates include men remanded in custody as well as those sentenced to prison: juvenile delinquents, first-time offenders and penitentiary recidivists. Carvings and inscriptions on tables, benches, trees and walls. are a manifestation of freedom and presence, testifying to the need of being important and remembered. Here, the signs, carved since 1994, are a desperate reminder of a need to delimit one’s own area of freedom.
